Get Angry: Thomas Clarkson

It’s not uncommon to find something on the news or our social media feeds that infuriates or disgusts us or even breaks our hearts. Most people are satisfied by hammering out an angry comment and leaving it at that. Some go a few steps further and actually get up and do something about it.

History gives us some notable examples of this second kind of person. After reading a heartbreaking account of a slave-ship captain avoiding murder charges after ordering 133 slaves be thrown overboard and the judge’s disgusting reasoning that such actions were no different than the killing of horses, Thomas Clarkson got angry. And in 1785, he did something about it.
